Laser Dentistry
Laser Dentistry
Lasers have found various applications in Dentistry and are now becoming an integral part of every dental operatory. Uses of lasers in dentistry include:
Hard tissue lasers can be used to remove dental decay in teeth for restoration
Correction of Gummy Smile
Soft tissue lasers are used for periodontal surgery such as Crown Lengthening.
Tooth Bleaching
Biopsy or lesion removal
Advantages of Lasers:
Lasers apparently cause less pain
Due to less trauma to the surrounding tissues there will be less bleeding
Since there is hardly any sound produced by the laser the patients will have less anxiety compared to the traditional drill
Less trauma to the surrounding tissue also means the health of those tissues will be maintained better.
Disadvantages of Laser:
Even if Lasers are used, a dental drill may be needed to finish the shape of the cavity
Lasers cannot be used for a previously filled tooth
Lasers cannot be used to prepare teeth for crown and bridges, also to fill decay present between two teeth.
Lasers are very expensive. They may cost upto $50000 while a traditional drill costs about $500
